There’s something here for everyone’s taste – and more information than you will find on any similar list for 2024. Of course, many, many 2024 titles have yet to be announced by publishers – books by such authors as Michael Connelly and Robert Galbraith. Some authors’ books have publication dates but no titles – Robert Crais (August 6) and Daniel Silva (July 16). There was no Louise Penny title released in 2023 so her legion of fans must be getting very anxious. They’ll have to wait a bit more. Louise says that the manuscript has been submitted, but the book is still untitled and not due out until late in 2024.
Some observations:
There are still a lot of great mysteries being published in the U.K. that don’t make it to our shores. See titles below that are marked “U.K. only” in bold. Fortunately two of my favorites from 2023 will be published here in the States in 2024: ASSASSIN EIGHTEEN by John Brownlow and SCARLET PAPERS by Matthew Richardson.
I have read 19 of the 2024 titles already and they are indicated by the titles in bold. You can expect many of them to be reviewed in the next issue of Deadly Pleasures. The book covers illustrated herein are of books I have read or intend to read. Cover art for some of the books coming out in late 2024 are not yet available.
Pleasant surprises (for me) on the list:
There is a new Mo Hayder book being published in the U.K. in 2024. She passed away in 2021. ???
A new Chris Whitaker book (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) after a 2-3 year hiatus since the wonderful WE BEGIN AT THE END.
There will be two new M. W. Craven books in 2024 – continuations of his two series.
A new Easy Rawlins book by Walter Mosley (FAREWELL, AMETHYSTINE) coming in June. Every time I read a new Easy Rawlins I think it is the last of the series, but he keeps coming back – which is a good thing.
The new Peter May title (THE BLACK LOCH) brings back one of my favorite characters — Fin MacLeod from THE BLACK HOUSE – Lewis Trilogy.
The British writer Simon Beckett may not be a name familiar to you. I think one or two of his excellent series books have been published in the States, but it’s been awhile. His series character is Dr. David Hunter, a forensic anthropologist. The seventh in the series, THE BONE GARDEN is coming out this year in the U.K. There are big gaps in time between publication of each book in the series. The last one was THE SCENT OF DEATH in 2019.
