Astute Remarks from Lee Vernon — A Deadly Pleasures Subscriber

Lee Vernon

From Lee Vernon : I am compelled to thank you and your great crew of reviewers for pointing me in the direction of [Jake] Needham and [M. W.] Craven. I would never have found these amazing writers on my own. I just finished Puppet Show and it was a WOW from the very beginning. It was one of those books where you know your are in good hands after the first few pages. Then Amazon gave me a wonderful present by putting almost all of the Craven e-books on sale for under $5. And they are still on sale!  [Credit for the Jake Needham recommendation goes to DP contributor Steele Curry, who turned us on to this excellent writer. M. W. Craven has a standalone thriller, FEARLESS, coming out in the States later this year. It’s very good.]

I have only been a DP subscriber for about 7 years. You have done an incredible job on the magazine and you keep on improving it. It was sad to see Mystery Scene magazine stop publishing. I read it mainly for the articles. Nothing against their reviewers, but mixing the reviews together made it less useful to me. I never got a connection with the individual reviewers. I love the way you give each reviewer their own section. Once I get a feeling for the type of books they really like and their rating scale, I can determine whether it is a book I want to read. If Larry gives a book a B rating, it still could be something I might really enjoy! [This is a point that I’ve been making for years in DP — find the reviewers whose tastes most coincide with yours and go with their recommendations.]

I read Ryan Steck’s rave review of The Narrator by Landon Beach. I checked it out on Amazon and saw it was on Kindle Unlimited and I still had several weeks left on my free trial. It was a  memorable read, but no “wow” rating from me. It had lots of twists and turns as a thriller should have. The main character wasn’t particularly likeable and when the mystery seemed to be solved (more than once), there were too many pages left to be the conclusion. You knew another twist had to be coming. It reduced the suspense level for me. It could possibly be a real killer audio book. The world of book narration was interesting. [I like Ryan Steck’s enthusiasm for thrillers, but sometimes it seems like he likes every book he reviews — something that, at times, I might be accused of as well.]

One last thought, you may already  be aware of the following link to Jen Ryland’s review of some of the best mysteries lists of 2022 since you have included her own personal best list on your website.

She really liked the Goodreads list. I have not found Goodreads reviews to agree to my taste in books. To each his own or her own. [I’m with you on this.]
Happy Holidays and good reading to all, Lee Vernon [Thanks, Lee, for a well-thought-out email.]
